Stillwater district unveils new technology services

Stillwater Area Public Schools District 834 will become more mobile-friendly this fall with the addition of two new services for parents and students. The district will introduce a new text alert service and lunch menu application for mobile devices that will keep families in the loop with what’s going on during the school day.
“Anything we can do to improve or increase our services for our students and parents is a good thing,” Superintendent Corey Lunn said. “When we’re downsizing ... it’s good to have a service that allows parents to not depend on staff as much.”

Lake Elmo hires lobby group for 2014 legislative session

At the Aug. 20 city council meeting, Lake Elmo officials voted unanimously to hire Messerli & Kramer, a St. Paul-based law firm, to represent the city during next year’s state legislative session.
The city plans to make a $2.6 million bonding request during the Legislature’s 2014 session, and hopes the lobby group can facilitate discussions to secure the money. The bonding is crucial for projects “relating to city-wide infrastructure” and helping the city address groundwater contamination, according to Mayor Mike Pearson.

Shoreview sign code changes to benefit businesses

Business owners in Shoreview will now have more flexibility in displaying signs advertising services.
The Shoreview City Council adopted changes to the city’s sign code at its Monday, Aug. 19 council meeting. The adopted changes will provide the business community more opportunities to display temporary and message center signage.

Authorities investigate suspicious death in Shoreview

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the suspicious death of a man found outside a building on the 5700 block of Hamline Avenue North in Shoreview on Thursday morning, Aug. 29.
As of Friday morning, the man’s identity had not been released. According to a Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office press release, the deceased is a black male who appears to have been in his late 20’s to late 30’s. The man had no identification on him when deputies arrived.

Suspect in custody following woman's death in Railroad Island apartment

Sammy Devel HendersonSammy Devel Henderson, 24, is charged with strangling Railroad Island resident Sherell Montrese Craighead, 30, according to a criminal complaint from the Ramsey County attorney's office.
Henderson faces charges of second-degree murder while committing criminal sexual conduct and assault in the third degree.

Mounds View School Board seeks levy renewal

The Mounds View School Board unanimously approved a resolution to put a levy renewal referendum on the ballot in November.
The district has been receiving $11.5 million annually from a voter approved property tax levy, which began in 2006 and will expire at the end of 2014.
If the levy is renewed it would begin in 2015 and continue through 2023.

School district will not operate NSP fitness center after Dec. 31

The 110 members of the North St. Paul Community Fitness Center will need to begin looking for a new place to exercise starting Jan. 1.
Although fitness center members were already aware that it was scheduled to close Dec. 31, many had hoped the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District would continue to operate it, perhaps as a work-based learning opportunity for alternative learning students.

Charges filed against St. Paul man in head-on crash

The Washington County Attorney’s Office has filed felony charges against a St. Paul man involved in a head-on collision on state Highway 5 in Lake Elmo last year.
Jon Wentz, 47, of St. Paul was driving his Buick Regal westbound on Highway 5 near Stillwater Lane Aug. 28, 2012, when he crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, striking a Honda Civic containing two sisters, ages 15 and 20, from Stillwater.

50-year-old dead after argument over driving behavior

Vang AloengA St. Paul man is dead after an early morning argument on Sunday, Sept. 1, according to the St. Paul Police Department.
Jeffery Thomas Elling, 50, was shot after reportedly confronting a teenager about his driving habits.
The argument and shooting both took place near the 1400 block of York Avenue, according to the complaint.

Suspicious death in Shoreview ruled a homicide

The cause of death of a man found outside a building on the 5700 block of Hamline Avenue North in Shoreview on Thursday morning, Aug. 29 has been classified as homicide.
On Friday, Aug. 30, a Ramsey County Medical Examiner confirmed that the man died from a gunshot wound that was not self-inflicted.
