The Guardian reports that EU President Ursula von der Leyen called on Ukraine to strengthen anti-corruption legislation after meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The European Commission is expected to finalize its views on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union next week.
After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zhelensky, the head of the European Commission said: “Further reforms are needed to strengthen the rule of law, combat corruption, or modernize the administration, which will help attract investors.
“Ukraine is at war. So your focus and our support is to end this terrible and terrible war. But we want to see more. With reconstruction, we want to see what happens next,” he told the Ukrainian president.
EU chairwoman Ursula van der Leyen said the EU members would meet at a summit on June 23-24, ahead of a “historic end” to Ukraine’s potential bid for EU membership.
“In 20 more years, when we look back, I hope we can say we did the right thing,” von der Leன்n told reporters during a return trip after a visit to Kiev.
The commission plans to release its recommendation by next weekend.
“Ukraine has achieved a lot in recent years, but much remains to be done. Our recommendation will reflect this carefully,” said the head of the European Commission.
