Ski club posts ski jumping schedule

The 120-year old Maplewood based St. Paul Ski Club has announced a busy schedule of ski jumping meets to be held at its Carver’s Lake Nordic Training site located in south Maplewood.

Two major ski jumping tournaments will be held beginning with an annual senior tournament Jan. 8.

On that date, the John R. Lyons Memorial Tournament will feature top skiers from throughout the upper Midwest competing from the 45-meter Harrington Hill.

In connection with the senior meet, junior competitions will also be held on the four jumping hills located at the site.

Lyons, for whom the tournament is named, spent a lifetime supporting the ski jumping sport as a coach and officer of the storied club, located just north of the intersection of Sterling Street and Carver Road.

In addition to the John R. Lyons tournament, the St. Paul Ski Club will host the National Masters Competitions on Jan. 27-28. This meet is designed to encourage former flyers to come out to compete. There will be several age classifications and competitions will be held on the 20-, 30- and 45-meter hills.

Invitations have been sent to clubs and individuals throughout the ski jumping world. Competitors are expected to turn out from throughout the U.S. and Canada for this gala event.

The winter ski jumping season will officially open with the annual junior training camp that will be held Dec. 27-29. Each day, instruction will be provided by members of the ski club.

Persons of any age and experience can obtain equipment at a nominal fee and are encouraged to give the sport a try.

Beginners’ instruction will be held on a “Rabbit Ears” snow bump (a 10-meter hill) on which the basics of the sport can be easily learned.

From the 10-meter hill, jumpers progress to the 20-meter before moving up to the 30- and 45-meter ski jumps.

Additionally, six Friday evening ski jumping meets have been scheduled. These meets focus on junior class ski jumpers and will progress from each of the ski jumping hills in various classes.
