Rosetown A’s come up short in league

Consecutive one-run losses in last week’s St. Paul League playoffs ended the Rosetown A’s’ season short of the state tournament. Air Freight Unlimited and Sport & Spine beat Rosetown on consecutive days to knock the A’s out of contention for a state berth.
Air Freight defeated Rosetown 7-6 on Thursday in the semifinals. It was AFU’s second consecutive win over the A’s, who dropped a 14-4 decision to Air Freight in the their final regular season league game. Air Freight, the fifth seed in the playoffs, went on to beat Eastside Merchants to clinch a state tournament spot.
Sport & Spine, the second seed, lost to Rosetown twice during the regular season but finally beat the A’s when it counted the most. Rosetown beat Sport & Spine by a combined score of 25-8 in the two regular-season meetings but fell 1-0 in the playoffs.
After beating Rosetown, Sport & Spine knocked off Highland Park and Eastside Merchants to claim the St. Paul League’s third state tournament berth. And they did it even though they lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Commanding Edge is the St. Paul League’s other state representative. They picked up their berth by winning the regular season league crown.
The Class A State Tournament begins Thursday afternoon and runs through August 22 with games held at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis and Midway Stadium in St. Paul. Rosetown finished runner-up to the Minnetonka Millers in the 2004 state tournament.

The eight regional winners then compete in the American Legion World Series in Rapid City, S.D.
Derek McCallum of Tri-City Red was named the Fourth District MVP. Last year, that honor went to Rosetown’s Corey Kieger.
