Arden Hills to discuss utility franchise fees

Should Arden Hills add an Xcel Energy  “franchise fee” -- which would be tacked onto residents’ gas and electric bills -- to boost funding for street, park and trail improvements?
The Arden Hills City Council has been studying the pros and cons of that idea and has scheduled public hearings next month to further discuss the issue with residents.

District 621 begins moving programs for all-day K

The Mounds View School District has begun relocating education programs to make way for the transition to free all-day kindergarten next school year.
The relocation of programs at the Snail Lake and Pike Lake education centers are necessary to make room for two kindergarten centers. The district’s six elementary schools will house first through fifth grades starting this fall, and all the district’s kindergarteners will attend classes at the two new centers.

Ramsey County Libraries celebrate Black History Month with a diverse itinerary

This February, Ramsey County Libraries will celebrate diversity with a series on black history. The Roseville and Maplewood branches of the library will present five free events  as part of their month-long public education program on African-American history.
Judy Woodward, the history coordinator for Ramsey County Libraries,  organized the series to honor Black History Month and join a Ramsey County-wide initiative to promote diversity.
The programming will highlight some of the history of Minnesota and the different cultural groups within the state.

Two treated following N.B. apartment fire

Two people were treated at an area hospital for minor smoke inhalation in the early morning hours of Jan. 14 following a second floor apartment fire in the 1000 block of West County Road D in New Brighton.
Six chilly building occupants, unable to escape due to heavy smoke, were removed from upper level balconies by St. Anthony and Roseville firefighters.

New Brighton authorizes contract with APi

The New Brighton City Council authorized a contract for private redevelopment with APi Group for an office expansion project in the New Brighton Exchange at its Jan. 14 council meeting.
APi Group is a Minnesota based parent company to 40 fire protection, industrial and specialty construction companies located throughout North America and the United Kingdom. The company’s headquarters have been in the New Brighton Exchange site since 2007, but they are a growing company in need of more space.

Dayton’s bonding proposal funds road improvements at TCAAP

Last week Gov. Mark Dayton introduced a nearly $1 billion bonding proposal that includes $29 million to revamp roadways near the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Arden Hills.
The $986 million bonding bill would be used to fund many other infrastructure projects across the state. In a written statement, Dayton said the bill would “help address many of the state’s critical infrastructure needs, while strengthening Minnesota’s economy and getting people back to work.”

St. Anthony Community Theater presents PlayFest

If you have ever wanted to write, direct or star in your own stage play, now is your chance. The St. Anthony Community Theater will be hosting its first ever PlayFest, where they are inviting teams of two to five people to write and stage a one-act play within 48 hours.
There will be rules each team must follow when writing the play, which will be given to the teams at an organizational meeting, held on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the St. Anthony Village High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Teams will then have 48 hours to write short, one-act plays, which they will perform on stage, starting at 7 p.m.

TCAAP open house scheduled for Jan. 22

The city of Arden Hills and Ramsey County are hosting a TCAAP open house at the Ramsey County Public Works Facility in Arden Hills on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  
The open house will provide residents an opportunity to learn more about proposed development at the site, as well as a chance to share opinions on future use at TCAAP.

Afton Alps celebrates 50 years

Following a change in ownership and months of renovations and new construction, Afton Alps is inviting the public to check out its improved resort and to celebrate 50 years of skiing.
The ski facility is no longer the rustic, mom-and-pop operation that attracted skiers for decades. The redesigned resort now features high-tech snowmaking machines, a new guest-services building, with a  stainless steel look, and improved terrain park.
