NEWSBRIEF: Renovations complete at Island Lake Elementary

After getting underway this spring, construction at Island Lake Elementary in Shoreview is complete. To mark the occasion, the Mounds View Public School District will host a ribbon-cutting and resident appreciation event at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 at the school, located at 3555 Victoria St. N.

Designed by Wold Architects and Engineers and built by Kraus-Anderson, the $5 million project at Island Lake includes three additions totaling 4,000 square feet. Add-ons feature new classrooms and a secure entry with canopy and vestibule.

In addition, 13,000 square feet of the existing building underwent significant upgrades, including the renovation and expansion of the office, media center and special education classrooms.

Island Lake was one of six district schools under construction this summer, as part of a multiyear construction project made possible by a $165 million bond referendum passed in 2017.

Construction is ongoing at Irondale and Mounds View high schools, Edgewood Middle School, and Bel Air and Turtle Lake elementary schools. The two additional elementary school projects are expected to be complete later this school year, with the remaining three expansions continuing into the summer of 2021.

Residents in attendance at the ribbon-cutting will also have an opportunity to learn more about a proposed district levy increase that will be on the ballot this fall, aimed at accounting for inflation, keeping class sizes low and funding additional student resources.
