Rep. Ruth Richardson, District 52B, May 13 announced that she was among 37 Midwestern and Canadian lawmakers chosen to participate in the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development (BILLD) training program that assists promising state leaders in the Midwest.

Richardson will meet with fellow lawmakers from Minnesota, 10 other Midwestern states, and four Canadian provinces on Aug. 9 through 13 at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Courses and seminars are conducted by Humphrey faculty, Midwestern legislative leaders, and professional development experts. In addition to curriculum designed to develop leadership skills, the program analyzes a variety of public policy issues, including the economy, trade, and health care policy.

“The work we do here at the Capitol has a real impact on peoples’ lives,” Richardson said. “I look forward to learning everything I can about how to be an effective servant for my community and my state, to make sure we’re productively and efficiently using our resources to improve health care quality and access, improve our schools, increase access to affordable housing, and rebuild our roads and bridges.”

BILLD was founded in 1995 to help new legislators meet the demands of increased policy responsibility being shifted to the states, and aims to fill a void in the shortage of training available for legislators.
