St. Thomas Academy takes second place at Economics Challenge State Championship

St. Thomas Academy placed second in the Adam Smith, or advanced placement, division of the statewide Economics Challenge on April 3 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Mounds View High School took first place.

St. Thomas Academy students Camden Callstrom, Andrew Finn, Peter Holmes, and Luke Kolar were in second place following the first three rounds of testing in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics/current events. In a final quiz bowl round against Mounds View High School, Mounds View High School took back their championship title. Dean Simmons, economics teacher at St. Thomas Academy, was their coach. 

To make it to the state competition, St. Thomas Academy placed second at the Twin Cities Regional Challenge on March 14. More than 250 students statewide competed in regional competitions to qualify for the state challenge. At the state competition, St. Thomas Academy competed in the Adam Smith division against teams from Edina High School, Mounds View High School, Richfield High School, Technical High School, Underwood High School, and Waubun High School. 72 students in 19 teams from 16 schools competed in the state competition in three divisions.
