Police stopped a 24-year-old St. Paul man the night of March 17 on westbound Interstate 694 at Interstate 35W for traffic offenses, and the deputy suspected the man was driving while intoxicated on St. Patrick’s Day. The man failed sobriety tests and was booked at the Ramsey County Jail for fourth-degree DWI. His arrest was part of a traffic safety DWI detail.

Police arrested a 24-year-old Mankato man for DWI in the early morning hours of March 23 after the man was found literally asleep at the wheel in a turn lane at Hamline Avenue and Highway 96.

Someone who lives in the 1800 block of Edgewater Avenue told police the morning of March 21 they found a pair of shoes that didn’t belong to them in their detached garage, apparently after an unknown person entered the unlocked structure overnight. Drugs

Police stopped a speeding car driven by a 25-year-old man March 14 on Larpenteur Avenue at Pleasant Street, and while an officer approached the car, they smelled marijuana coming from inside it. Upon searching the car, police found cocaine and two bags of marijuana; the driver was booked at the Ramsey County Jail for felony first-degree drug possession.

More questions than answers

An officer patrolling the area of Eustis Street and Idaho Avenue March 11 saw a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a closed business. The vehicle came to a stop and the driver yelled out his window, “My girlfriend had a stroke.” The man then drove off and police tried to stop him, but he got away.

Little Canada

Mickey DWI

A deputy headed to the McDonald’s in the 2200 block of Rice Street a half hour before bar close time March 17 on a report of a driver bumping another in the drive-thru. The deputy stopped a 25-year-old Roseville man, the driver who did the bumping, as he attempted to leave the restaurant parking lot. The man claimed he was unaware of hitting the other car; the other driver said the man hit their car then yelled at them and tried to leave. The man showed all the tell-tale signs of drunkenness and blew a .18 blood alcohol concentration. He was booked at the Ramsey County Jail for fourth-degree DWI.

Riding the rim

Deputies assisted state troopers the night of March 22 in locating and stopping a 38-year-old North St. Paul man wanted for a hit-and-run in Minneapolis. The impaired man was seen driving on a wheel rim and driving fast from Highway 36 to northbound Interstate 35W before being stopped and turned over to the State Patrol.

Mounds View

Blow a stop sign, crash

Officers responded to an accident with injuries the afternoon of March 20 on County Road I at Long Lake Road. Both had suspected minor injuries but neither received medical attention.

Recovered vehicle

Police found a vehicle that had been stolen out of St. Paul in the area of Mounds View Boulevard and Long Lake Road just after midnight March 21. St. Paul PD was alerted.

New Brighton

Burglary

Someone broke into Limu Coffee in the 500 block of Fifth Street NW as reported the morning of March 12. The burglar stole $2 that was in the tip jar; the owner said that because of previous burglaries she keeps no money in the register overnight. New Brighton police had been at the shop around 1:30 a.m. that same morning responding to the business’s alarm sounding, though they found the place secured. It wasn’t until the burglary was reported that scratch marks on a side door were found, indicating the thief’s point of entry.

Catalytic converter thieves caught

An officer headed to the 1300 block of Seventh Street NW in the early morning hours of March 22 because a vehicle linked to stealing catalytic converters off cars had been seen in the area — it was described as a silver Honda with a loud exhaust. The officer stopped the vehicle at Old Highway 8 and Foss Road and two St. Paul men, a 22-year-old and 20-year-old, were inside. Inside the car were burglary tools in plain view, and both men had outstanding warrants. A search of the car revealed catalytic converters in the trunk. Both men were arrested for felony possession of burglary tools and criminal property damage and were booked at the Ramsey County Jail.

Left on jacks

A 45-year-old man told police that someone stole the rims off his vehicle overnight as it was parked at apartments in the 800 block of County Road D; he found his vehicle, a 2014 Ford Fusion, on jacks. It’s an estimated loss of $2,652.

Motorcycle DWI

An officer clocked a 48-year-old Fridley man going 51 in a 30-mph zone on a motorcycle on Innsbruck Drive the evening of March 23, so he pulled him over at 32nd Avenue NW. The man, who did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his license, which said he’s to be alcohol-free, said he’d taken the bike out for a spin and was on his way home from the bar, where he’d had two beers. He appeared intoxicated and failed field sobriety tests, blowing a .186 blood alcohol concentration. He was booked at the Ramsey County Jail for second-degree DWI.

Theft from auto

A 51-year-old man told police the evening of March 18 that someone had broken a window on his car as it was parked at the LA Fitness in the 1100 block of Silver Lake Road that day and stolen a satchel from it containing his airplane keys, flight logs and his aviation ID card, an estimated loss of just more than $500.

Shoreview

Unsuccessful fraud

A 63-year-old man told police March 22 that he was selling an item and that a buyer sent him a check for more than the requested amount. The man was supposed to deposit the check and send the leftover money to an unknown third party for “moving expenses.” The check was a fake and no cash changed hands. This is a well-known scam and such arrangements should raise red flags.

St. Anthony

Caught in the act

Security at the Cub Foods in the 3900 block of Silver Lake Road told police March 15 that a 30-year-old man had twice been seen stuffing merchandise into his clothing — once by employees and again by another customer who confronted him. The man never attempted to steal the items by leaving but the store asked that police come and give him a trespass notice so he can’t come back.

Counterfeiter

Someone used a fake $100 bill for a meal at the Smashburger in the 3900 block of Silver Lake Road March 10 and left with the $85.37 change but not the food. Police posted a photo of the suspect to social media and were informed about nine other similar incidents of counterfeits being used like this from around the metro area.

Lock it all up

With the warmer weather comes the prowlers — a 37-year-old man who lives in the 3400 block of Harding Street told police March 7 that someone entered his unlocked detached garage and rummaged through his two unlocked cars, stealing $5 worth of change. Similar reports were made the same day from the 3300 block of Belden Drive and the 2500 block of 33rd Avenue.

More drugs

A 50-year-old man stopped by police March 5 in the 2600 block of 27th Avenue was arrested and booked at the Hennepin County Jail for fifth degree drug possession — methamphetamine — driving with a canceled license and an Anoka County warrant for driving with a canceled license
