Name that movie

Inquiring minds

Each week the staff at the Roseville Library answers more than 2,500 questions on every subject under the sun. Here is one of the most interesting ones they’ve gotten lately.

Q. I’m trying to think of an old movie. It stars Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and (I think) a huge, old-fashioned mainframe computer. Can you help?

A.

What else could it be but the 1950s film “Desk Set”? Beloved by reference librarians everywhere, the movie features Hepburn as the head of “corporate research” who is afraid that she and her entire department are about to be outsourced by efficiency expert Spencer Tracy and his breakthrough invention, the “EMERAC” — Electromagnetic MEmory and Research Arithmetical Calculator. The library owns several copies of this and other classic films starring that immortal comic duo, Tracy and Hepburn.

Do you have a film or book that you remember clearly in all respects — except you can’t recall either the title and/or the author? Try the library. Our staff has years of experience in identifying half-forgotten works. You can tell us whatever details — no matter how obscure — you do remember, and we can very likely identify and reunite you with your lost treasure.
