East Side Table received $8,423.73 for its healthy food programming as February’s Mississippi Market Natural Foods Co-op Positive Change recipient. Co-op shoppers provide support by donating their reusable bag credit or rounding up purchases to support local community partners.

“We are grateful for Mississippi Market’s generous support and continued commitment to the community,” said John Swanholm, vice president of Fairview Community Advancement. “The co-op is a great partner and is helping us advance the work of East Side Table.”

East Side Table is composed of 13 local nonprofit organizations working together to improve food preparation skills and make cooking at home easier for St. Paul’s East Side neighbors. East Side Table is hosted by HealthEast, part of Fairview Health Services, and supported in part by grants and generous donations.

East Side Table provides free make-at-home meal kits in partnership with Local Crate, a subscription-based meal kit company, to families registered in the 10-week program. The goal of the kits is to build food skills, as well as encourage families to cook new foods and eat together more often. The recipes provided in the meal kits reflect the diverse and unique cultures on the East Side.

In addition, East Side Table works in the community providing cooking demonstrations, offering classes, and hosting nutrition workshops that focus on chronic disease management. A group of older adults gather monthly and serve as counsel to East Side Table on how to best engage the senior population in accessing healthy food.

“Our motto is ‘breaking bread, sharing skills’,” says Terese Hill, coordinator of East Side Table. “We want to nourish the East Side community by sharing new cooking skills, encouraging healthy eating, and helping bring families together over healthy meals at their own table.”
