Railroad Island man dies weeks after house explosion

After his home exploded last month in the Railroad Island neighborhood, John Lundahl, 80, died the night of Dec. 11 due to his injuries from the explosion.

He’d been pulled from the rubble of the home in critical condition.

His brother, Richard Lundahl, shared the update on Lundahl’s GoFundMe site the morning of Dec. 12.

“He wasn’t responding to treatments for the last week or so and he peacefully went last night,” Richard Lundahl wrote. “We cannot thank you enough for all your support and kind words and donations.”

The home, which was located at 672 Payne Ave., exploded around 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving. St. Paul firefighters responded to a gas leak, shutting off gas for the entire block. An exact cause has not yet been released and the explosion is still under investigation.

Lundahl’s dog and cat were also rescued from what was left of the home. In the Dec. 12 update, Richard Lundahl said the pets had been rescued and are being cared for.

Richard Lundahl said donations already received will be used for his brother’s hospital bills and that the fundraising campaign will be closed down.
