NEWSBRIEF: Call for women artists

On June 8, 2019 artist Marilyn Artus will begin a 14-month journey across the United States in celebration of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. The project is titled “Her Flag LLC.” During her travels she will be sewing, Her Flag, a grand flag measuring 18 feet by 26 feet. Her Flag will be the result of a collaboration with 36 women artists who live in each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote. Each of these 36 artists will design one stripe of the 36 striped flag that Artus will sew in the capital city of each state.

A call for artists began on July 19 and will end on Nov. 5 of this year. July 19 marks 170 years after the Seneca Falls Convention, the first ever women’s rights convention in the United States. Interested artists can find detailed information on submitting for this project at www.herflag. The Her Flag Call for Entry Video can be viewed at vimeo.com/280819964.

Her Flag is a not a political piece of work, rather a powerful positive symbol used to educate and celebrate this truly momentous American anniversary. Crowdfunding will begin on Monday, Nov. 26. Her Flag will be using the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter for the initial phase of fundraising and is also being fiscally sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts. Artus lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She worked as a designer in the gift industry for thirteen years and in 2008 she became a full time visual artist. She has been reinterpreting the American flag in her recent works and has created tribute works to Susan B. Anthony, Victoria Woodhull, Gloria Steinem, Ida B. Wells, Candy Darling and Beyonce.
