Panama Canal then and now

The Panama Canal’s expansion project, Third Set of Locks Project, was completed on June 26, 2016. This project doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal by adding a new lane of traffic, allowing for a larger number of ships and increasing the width and depth of the lanes and locks allowing larger ships to pass. Register by Wednesday, Nov. 1 for this event on Nov. 8, which will begin at 1 p.m., at Thompson Park Activity Center, 1200 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul. Bats can eat up to their body weight in insects every night including mosquitos, moths and other agricultural pests. Dodge Nature Center naturalist Anna Toenjes will reveal the myths, natural history and uncertain future of bats in Minnesota. There will be a short hike to identify where bats roost during the day. Registration is required by Nov. 3 for this session that will take place on Nov. 7 at Dodge Nature Center Farm Education Entrance 3, 1701 Charlton St., West St. Paul. The program will run from 11 a.m. to noon, with lunch served from noon to 1 p.m. Cost is $15 for the program and lunch, or just $5 if only interested in the program. Water park grand re-opening

Come to Veterans Memorial Community Center, 8055 Barbara Ave., Inver Grove Heights, on Nov. 4 from noon to 4 p.m., to explore the newly remolded water park. Enjoy log rolling, a dive-in movie, games, beach ball drops, music and photobooth. Food will be available for purchase. Cost is $6 per person. 


Junk Paleontology

Work with an artist to create your own Junkosaurus using a lot of junk and your wild imagination. Registration is required, and it will take place at the South St. Paul Library, 106 Third Ave. N. This is a Minnesota Legacy program sponsored by Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Taking place on Nov. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m., it is open to ages 6 to 14. Town Hall meeting

On Monday, Nov. 6, Rep. Rick Hansen and Sen. Matt Klein will be hosting a town hall meeting at Harmon Park, 230 Bernard St. W., in West St. Paul from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. An update on the legislative issues facing Minnesota and the community will be given as well as an opportunity for constituents to share their concerns. Light refreshments will be available at this free event.


Senior Surf Day

You are invited to a session on learning to use a computer and surf the Internet. Sponsored by the Minnesota Board on Aging, register by Monday, Nov. 6 for this session on Nov. 13. Running from 2 to 4 p.m., at Thompson Park Activity Center, 1200 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul, during this session you will learn to type in a web address and navigate pages, determine if a website is secure, use search engines to get information, access internet sites, and get familiar with the parts of a computer. Cost is $5, and you can register by calling 651-403-8300.
