Raiders girls hockey gears up for post-season

The 2016-17 season didn’t go all that well for the Roseville Area High School girls hockey team but the Raiders appear to have found another gear as the playoffs approach. Roseville headed into the final game of the regular season riding a five-game unbeaten streak.

That’s pretty good considering prior to that streak Roseville had won or tied only six of its first 19 games.

During the unbeaten streak, Roseville has victories over Woodbury, Park-Cottage Grove, Cretin-Derham Hall and White Bear Lake and a tie with Stillwater. Roseville closed out the regular season with a game at East Ridge on Feb. 4, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

The Section 4AA playoffs begin with the quarterfinals on Feb. 11 and all games in the tournament take place at Aldrich Arena. The seeds for the section tournament were not available for this edition of the Review.

Roseville can probably expect to seed in the four, five or six range and likely will face Mounds View, Stillwater or North/Tartan in the first round. The Raiders went 0-5-1 against those teams in the regular season.

Preventing opponents’ goals seems to be the main reason for Roseville’s late-season surge. During the five-game unbeaten streak, the Raiders gave up no more than two goals in a single game. Prior to the streak, Roseville had given up five or more goals in a game in five of the previous six contests.

Maddison Lehto is Roseville’s main goaltender and she is 8-8-2 on the season. Her goals-against average sat at 2.93 and her save percentage was .903. She averaged 35 saves per game in the games against Stillwater, Cretin-Derham Hall and White Bear Lake during Roseville’s unbeaten streak.

Madison Gaffney leads Roseville’s offense with 19 points on 10 goals and nine assists. Ciara Colvard is next with five goals and nine assists for 14 points.

The Section 4AA playoffs continue next week with the semifinals on Feb. 14 and the championship game set for Feb. 17.
