Pair of one-goal losses at state for Strikers

The Columbia Heights/St. Anthony Village CI division adapted soccer team went 0-2 in the state tournament last week but didn’t go out quietly. The Strikers, making their second consecutive trip to state, dropped a pair of tough, one-goal games.

Playing in the tournament at Stillwater Area High School, the Strikers went toe-to-toe with Southeast No. 1 seed South Washington County in the first round before losing 7-6 in overtime. The Thunderbolts tied the game late in regulation and then came up with the game-winning goal in the extra session.

Junior Mark Hanson paced the Strikers with five goals while fellow 11th grader Jason Garcia scored the other goal.

South Washington County went on to lose in the semifinals and the third-place match to post a 1-2 record in the tournament.

The quarterfinal loss dropped the Strikers into the consolation semifinals, where they squared off with Southwest No. 2 seed Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville. The Blazing Cats had just enough offense to get past Columbia Heights/St. Anthony Village 5-4.

Garcia got the Strikers on the board and Hanson followed with the team’s next three goals. Senior netminder Tyler Krawczynski faced a barrage of Blazing Cats’ shots and made 13 saves.

The Strikers finished the season with a record of 7-6-1. At one point during the regular season the Strikers were 3-4-1 before winning their final four matches.
