Prep hockey season is here

While the recent weather might not make one think of hockey season, the calendar says it’s time. The high school girls hockey season is underway and the puck drops for Roseville Area High School with three games this week.

The Raiders open the 2016-17 campaign at home on Nov. 16 against North/Tartan, a second-year cooperative team made up of players from North St. Paul High School and Tartan High School. Roseville beat the NorTans 2-1 in their meeting last season.

Later in the week, Roseville treks north to play Grand Rapids on Nov. 18 and Duluth on Nov. 19. The Raiders fell 2-1 to Grand Rapids last season and did not play Duluth. Roseville’s other game up north last season was a 3-0 victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.

The Raiders are coming back after posting a 12-14 record a season ago.

Next week, Roseville plays at Minnetonka on Nov. 23 and then opens Suburban East Conference play the following week with a game at Mounds View on Nov. 29 and a home game against Forest Lake on Dec. 3.

Roseville’s top returning scorers are seniors Maddison Gaffney, who recorded 22 points last season, and Ciara Colvard, who had 11 points. The Raiders’ No. 1 goalie was a senior last year so that job will fall to junior Maggie Gilchrist and sophomore Maddison Lehto, who split the back-up duties last season.
