RAHS football comes up short against Maple Grove

Based on the final score, the Roseville-Maple Grove football playoff game was a typical two seed vs. seven seed blowout. But a deeper look at the box score shows a close contest that wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter.

Roseville gave the Crimson all they could handle in the Class 6A first-round match-up on Oct. 28. The Raiders led by four points after three quarters before Maple Grove took control in the fourth quarter en route to a 42-18 final.

Maple Grove scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including three in the final three minutes to turn a nail-biter into a runaway. With the victory, the Crimson advanced to the second round of the playoffs and a home game against third-seeded Edina.

For Roseville (3-6), the loss was yet another “close but no cigar” contest. In six losses this season, the Raiders kept four of them close deep into the second half.

Against Maple Grove, Roseville led or was within one score into the final three minutes of the game. Maple Grove put the game away with a 20-yard touchdown pass and two interceptions that the Crimson returned for touchdowns.

Up to that point, the Raiders had matched Maple Grove touchdown for touchdown. The Crimson opened the scoring on a three-yard touchdown run on a drive that was extended by a Roseville facemask penalty on a fourth-down play in which the Raiders had stopped Maple Grove short of a first down.

Roseville answered later in the first quarter when Luke Bouchart found Levi Brown for a 10-yard touchdown pass. The eight-play, 76-yard drive also included a 20-yard completion from Bouchart to Brown.

Maple Grove retook the lead on the first play of the second quarter. The six-yard touchdown pass completed a 12-play, 65-yard scoring drive by the Crimson.

Roseville responded for the second time in the first half as Bouchart hit Anthony Weber for a four-yard touchdown pass just under four minutes before halftime.

The third quarter looked like it would be points-free until Brown came up with a huge defensive play. His interception deep in Roseville territory helped set up what could have been the Raiders’ go-ahead score.

Roseville converted the interception into points by driving 97 yards in seven plays. The big incident on the drive was a roughing-the-punter penalty on Maple Grove. The Raiders took advantage when Bouchart teamed up again with Brown for a 43-yard touchdown pass play.

Maple Grove rebounded following the Roseville score and drove to the Raiders  eight-yard line as the third quarter expired. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Maple Grove regained the lead for good on an eight-yard touchdown run.

Roseville’s Joe Wright set up his team’s offense nicely with a kick return out to near midfield but the possession ended with a Maple Grove interception. The Crimson turned the turnover into seven points with 2:58 to play in the game.

Now in desperation mode, Roseville went to the air trying to get quick scores but it was the Crimson who came up with the points. Maple Grove returned the first interception 30 yards for a touchdown and the second 65 yards for the score.

Bouchart finished the game with 197 yards on 15-for-26 passing. He also led the Raiders in rushing with 64 yards on 11 carries.

In the receiving department, Brown caught four passes, two for touchdowns, for 87 yards. Victor Yang made five catched for 51 yards.

Maple Grove amassed 365 total yards of offense while Roseville finished with 293.
