Returning players set to lead North girls soccer

Playoff victories have not come easily for the North High School girls soccer team in recent years. The Polars have been one-and-done in the post-season in each of the past seven seasons.

North is out to change that this fall.

The Polars return nine varsity players from last year’s team that went 10-5-1 in the regular season. Among them is senior Lauryn Smith, who returns after scoring 11 goals and dishing out four assists in 2015.

North entered the section tournament last year as the No. 3 seed but fell 2-1 to sixth-seeded Stillwater in the first round.

“Our goal is always to be conference champs and win the first section game,” said fourth-year head coach Katie Oelker.

Even with nine returning players, there is still plenty of youth on the roster. Oelker anticipates possibly starting an eighth grader and having a sophomore see time at goalkeeper.

“We are a young team despite the number of returning players,” Oelker said.

North opened the season last week with a 4-0 victory over Irondale as Smith recorded the hat trick.

North also faced Minneapolis Southwest last week but past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

On the docket this week for the Polars is a road game at defending Class AA state champion Eagan on August 30 and a home game against Roseville on Sept. 1.
