Polars ready for another run at state

The 2015 North High School boys soccer team appeared poised for a trip to the state tournament. The Polars lost just twice in the regular season but were tripped up in the section final.

This year’s version returns eight starters from that team so North seems more than capable of making another serious bid at a state-tournament berth.

Head coach Casey Holm, who is in his 10th season as North’s head coach, describes this year’s personnel as “a senior-laden group who is strong in the attack.”

Among the players who return this fall is senior Robert Anigbogu, who is entering his third season as a captain. Juniors Ata Claremond and Busquets Jeudi are back following all-state seasons in 2015.

Jeudi, who is originally from Haiti, earned some preseason national accolades last week when he was named to the All-USA preseason boys soccer team by USA Today. In 2015, Jeudi scored 11 goals and dished out an astounding 37 assists. The assist total was only one off the single-season Class AA record.

In addition to a state berth, North also has another conference championship to defend this season. The Polars have won the past six Metro East Conference/Classic Suburban Conference titles. They were a perfect 8-0 — 9-0 if you count the playoffs — against Metro East Conference foes last season.

North opens the season on Thursday, Aug. 25 with a 7 p.m. home game against Park Center. The Polars also play at Park-Cottage Grove on Aug. 27 at 11 a.m.

The rest of North’s non-conference opponents include Woodbury, White Bear Lake, Stillwater, Blaine, Duluth East and Hudson, Wisconsin.

The Polars begin the defense of its conference-title streak on Sept. 8 with a home game against Hill-Murray.
