Newcomers set to push RAHS girls cross country veterans

Replacing the athletes who graduated the previous spring is always crucial for teams to have repeated success. The girls’ cross country team at Roseville Area High School has usually been able to replenish its roster and this year is no different.

Head coach Mary Schifsky is excited for the group of seventh and eighth graders who are out for the team this season.

“We have a very large crew of new seventh and eighth graders who are very promising right now,” said Schifsky, who is in her 16th season as the Raiders’ head coach. “After just three days of practice, we are very excited.”

There are 10 seventh graders out for cross country and Schifsky said many years she’s lucky to get one or two. Some of the newcomers this season could challenge for spots in the varsity lineup.

“It’s making our older girls definitely reassess what they didn’t do over the summer,” Schifsky said. “It’s going to push them to be better.”

Among the veterans who are back are junior Sam Kurkowski, sophomore Carly Dahms and senior Naomi Boehm. Kurkowski was Roseville’s second runner in 2015 and appears poised to take over the No. 1 spot.

“She just gets better every year because she figures it out a little more,” said Schifsky about Kurkowski.

Dahms is in her second year of cross country and is coming off a strong track and field season. She and Kurkowski ran in the state track meet in the 4x800-meter relay.

“She learned a lot and it definitely shows right now,” Schifsky said of Dahms. “It just grew her confidence and she’s just blowing it out of the water right now.”

Boehm is in her sixth and final season of varsity cross country and she has run in the state meet in the previous five.

Roseville opens the season on Aug. 26 with a meet at the University of St. Catherine in St. Paul.

Graduates in college

Two of last season’s seniors are competing on collegiate cross country teams this fall.

Sarah Conlon, who won the Section 4AA individual championship last year, is a member of the women’s cross country team at the University of Nebraska.

Hanna Torvi, who was also a standout Nordic skier at Roseville, is on the roster of the women’s cross country team at Northern Michigan University. Caroline Brisbois, a 2014 Roseville graduate, is also on the NMU roster.
