Rosetown legion baseball completes season

The Rosetown American Legion baseball team pulled off an impressive upset in the first round of the Sub-State 7 playoffs but was unable to secure any more victories in the tournament. The Rockets dropped their next two contests and saw their season come to an end.

After surprising the third-seeded North St. Paul 39ers in the first round, the sixth-seeded Rockets lost back-to-back games to second-seeded Hamline Purple and fourth-seeded West St. Paul.

Hamline Purple was the only team that didn’t lose to a lower-seeded opponent in the first round and it followed up that first-round win by facing Rosetown in round two. The Rockets were unable to spring a second upset and lost to Purple 24-3 in six innings.

The loss was Rosetown’s third to Hamline Purple this summer. During the Fourth District season, Hamline dumped the Rockets 11-2 and 7-2.

After suffering its first loss of the sub-state tournament, Rosetown faced its first elimination game and it came against West St. Paul Challenger. West St. Paul, which lost to fifth-seeded Kramer-Berg 4-3 in the first round and beat top-seeded Fridley Gold Eagle 8-6 in the second round, knocked Rosetown out of the tournament with a 13-3, seven-inning victory.

West St. Paul went on to lose to Hamline Purple in the next round and was eliminated.

North St. Paul, following its loss to Rosetown, fought off elimination twice by beating seventh-seeded Hamline Red 12-9 and Kramer-Berg 11-1 in seven innings. The 39ers then saw their season come to an end in a 3-2 loss to ninth-seeded Oakdale in the semifinals.

Oakdale, which beat eighth-seeded Rosemount 13-0, Fridley Gold Eagle 9-3 and Kramer-Berg 8-0 in its first three games, fell to Hamline Purple 8-2 in game four.

After beating North St. Paul, Oakdale matched up against Hamline Purple again in the final and Purple was once again too strong. Hamline beat Oakdale and claimed the sub-state title with a 15-5, seven-inning victory.

Hamline Purple represented Sub-State 7 and the Fourth District in this past weekend’s state tournament in Delano. The tournament took place past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

The 16 teams in the state tournament represented seven of the 10 districts in Minnesota. The districts that did not advance a team to the state tournament were Five, Seven and Nine.

This is the fourth year of the Sub-State format used to determine the state-tournament field. The American Legion baseball teams in the state are divided into 15 groups called sub-states and each sub-state holds a double-elimination tournament to determine a champion.

In four years, two districts have yet to see a team advance to state via a sub-state championship. Districts Five and Nine haven’t been represented in the state tournament since 2011, the last year of district tournaments being the route to the state tournament.
