Rams play in adapted softball state tournament

The Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville PI adapted softball team recently closed out its season with a high honor. The Rams took part in the state tournament on June 3-4 at Coon Rapids High School.

The Rams, the No. 4 north seed, struggled against some solid competition and went 0-2 in the tournament.

Rochester, the No. 1 south seed, was the Rams’ quarterfinal opponent and showed why it drew that top seed. The Raiders scored in every inning in which they batted and closed out their 11-1 victory in five innings.

The Rams drew first blood by scoring a run in the top of the first inning but the lead didn’t last long. Rochester answered with two runs in its half of the first and tacked on five more in the second inning. The Raiders pounded out 14 hits.

Olivia Pittman had half of the Rams’ four hits.

The loss dropped the Rams into the consolation bracket, where they faced No. 3 south seed St. Paul Humboldt. The Hawks, which lost 17-13 to No. 2 north seed Wayzata/Minnetonka in the quarterfinals, continued to put up big offensive numbers against the Rams. Humboldt won the match-up 16-8.

Like they did in the first round, the Rams started quickly, this time with four runs in the top of the first. They added two more in the second but it wasn’t enough to keep up with St. Paul Humboldt, which scored three in the first, two in the second, five in the fourth, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

The Hawks finished with 22 hits while the Rams amassed 17. Luke Kostecky paced the Rams with four hits.

The Rams finished their season with a record of 1-9. Dakota United won the state championship by defeating Rochester 13-7 in the finals.
