State tournament awaits for Concordia Academy fastpitch

Concordia Academy is probably the least-likely participant in this week’s state fastpitch softball tournament. The Beacons finished the regular season with a losing record, didn’t win more than two games in a row in the regular season and was blown out in the first game of the section final.

Despite all of that, the Beacons will find themselves on one of the diamonds at Caswell Park in North Mankato on Thursday morning.

Concordia Academy went 8-10 in the regular season but drew the No. 2 seed in the Section 4AA tournament. The Beacons then rattled off three-straight victories to reach the section final.

Awaiting Concordia in the final was top-seeded St. Agnes, which lost to the Beacons during the regular season and earlier in the playoffs. The Aggies had payback in mind and delivered it in game one on May 31 at the University of Northwestern in Roseville.

Concordia Academy grabbed an early lead when Taylor Brunn led off the bottom of the first with a base hit. Brunn moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout.

St. Agnes answered with four runs in the top of the third and blew the game wide open with five runs in the fifth. That would then be it for the scoring as the Aggies won 9-1.

That set up a second section title game on June 1, again at Northwestern. Game two was much closer and the outcome was in doubt right up until the final out.

With the game tied at 5-5 going to the seventh inning, Concordia Academy plated four runs to take control. St. Agnes tried a bottom-of-the-inning rally but could come up with only two runs, which allowed the Beacons to hold on for a 9-7 victory.

In the decisive seventh inning, Concordia Academy got single runs batted in from Alyssa Moore (on a triple), Madelynn Harre, Emma Brunn and Sydney Pelzer (on a double).

With the section title in tow, Concordia Academy heads to the state tournament for the first time since 2004 and the first time under head coach Gina Tupper.

The Beacons (12-11) open the state tournament on June 9 at 11 a.m. against Section 5AA champion Rockford (21-3). Their second-round opponent will be either Section 6AA champion Pequot Lakes (23-2) or Section 3AA champion Pipestone.

Concordia is one of just two teams in the Class AA tournament with fewer than 20 victories. Pipestone leads all of the teams at 24-0.
