Irondale sophomore finishes strong at Hamline Elite Meet

Irondale High School sophomore Julia Hayes has already earned three all-state track and field honors and appears to be on track for some more later this season. Hayes fared well at the Hamline Elite Meet on Friday at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Hayes came home with a pair of top-three finishes in the hurdle events. She finished second to East Ridge senior Karina Joiner in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.01 seconds. Joiner broke the meet record, which she set last year, with a time of 14.48 seconds.

Hayes also picked up a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.86 seconds. Thief River Falls senior Meleah Biermaier won the event with a meet-record time of 43.08 seconds and Joiner took second in 43.82 seconds.

Hayes made her first trip to the state track and field meet as an eighth grader in 2014 and finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Last year, she took fifth in the 300 hurdles and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles.

Hayes and her Irondale teammates are back in action on Tuesday at an invitational meet in Buffalo.
