Wrestling state tournament recap

Five members of the Mounds View High School wrestling team competed in the state tournament last month. The Mustangs had varying degrees of success in the tournament.

Freshman Rowan Morgan had the longest stay of the bunch as he competed in four matches and went 2-2. Wrestling at 170 pounds, Morgan opened the tournament with a 6-3 decision over Buffalo sophomore Jacob Scherber.

A second-round, 9-3 loss to Hastings senior Austin Eichmann dropped Morgan into wrestlebacks, where he pinned Faribault senior Isaac VanThomme 21 seconds into the second period. Morgan’s tournament run then came to an end when Little Falls senior Justin Jenks pinned Morgan in the first period.

Morgan finished his season with a record of 30-11.

Senior Tanner Day was the other Mustang to record a victory at the state tournament. Competing at 132 pounds, Day kicked things off with a 6-4 victory over senior Monty Frederiksen of Cambridge-Isanti.

Eagan senior Riley White beat Day 6-2 in the second round and Day saw his stay in the tournament end with a 3-0 loss to Farmington senior Jamin LeDuc in the first round of wrestlebacks.
