North, Tartan wrestlers ranked

The two wrestling teams from School District 622 each had one ranked wrestler in the latest poll put together by The Guillotine, an online amateur wrestling publication.

North High senior Louie Varland and Tartan senior Justin Burg made the top 10 in their respective Class AAA weight classes in the rankings released Jan. 15.

Varland wrestles at 160 pounds for the Polars and was ranked 10th. Burg is a 152-pounder for the Titans and was ranked fifth.

Burg has been impressive in his recent matches. On Jan. 16 at the Titan Duals, Burg scored a fall in just 35 seconds in the match against Grand Rapids. In a Metro East Conference dual against South St. Paul on Jan. 14, Burg beat his Packer counterpart with a fall in 1:25.

This is a low-key week for Burg and the Titans with only one event scheduled. Tartan heads to St. Thomas Academy on Jan. 28 for a quadrangular along with St. Agnes and St. Croix Lutheran from the Tri-Metro Conference.

Varland and his Polar teammates have a busy week on tap with a triangular on Jan. 28 and a quadrangular on Jan. 30. North hosts Henry Sibley and St. Paul Como Park in the triangular and travels to Roseville along with St. Paul Central and Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village for the quad meet.
