Man shot by another driver on I-694 in Shoreview

A man driving eastbound on Interstate 694 was shot, police believe, by another driver passing him on the highway.

According to Randy Gustafson, public communication and crime prevention coordinator for the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, a deputy on patrol was driving east on I-694 and spotted a car pulling over to the side of the road between Lexington Avenue North and Victoria Street North around 12:37 a.m. Jan. 1.

Thinking the driver was merely experiencing car trouble, the deputy stopped to check on the situation, Gustafson said.

When the deputy made contact with the vehicle, however, she found that the trouble was not as much with the 2002 Honda Accord — though it did have bullet holes scattered across its side — but with the driver, who'd been shot, Gustafson said.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from St. Paul, was driving with his 26-year-old brother from their friend's house in Brooklyn Park to their home in St. Paul just after midnight New Years Day, they told police.

According to police, the man who was shot was not in critical condition, but did require immediate first aid attention and was later transported to the hospital for further treatment. Police did not say where the man was shot.

According to Gustafson, the two brothers told investigators the vehicle that shot at them appeared to be a GMC Sierra pick-up truck, either silver or white in color. The men also believed there was another vehicle traveling with the truck, which might have been a 2002 Nissan Xterra, they said.

The victims said they thought they were being followed by the two suspect vehicles all the way from Brooklyn Park to where they were shot at on the highway, Gustafson said.

Police are investigating this incident and officials have not concluded whether this was a case of road rage, a feud or something else entirely.
