Holiday tournaments abound for Raiders, Beacons

For the six varsity sports teams from Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy participating in holiday tournaments in the next week, there’s a little bit of everything. There are local events and those requiring some driving and overnight accommodations; there are small four-team tournaments and larger eight-team, playoff-type formats.

Here’s a look at where those teams are headed over the next week or so.

Roseville

Three Roseville teams are involved in holiday events. The first one to get started is the boys basketball team, which is headed to the Granite City Classic in St. Cloud on Friday and Saturday.

The event features 14 teams playing single games both days with the opponents predetermined. Eighth-ranked Roseville opens up against No. 2 Champlin Park at 2:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, at St. Cloud Apollo High School. On Saturday, Dec. 27, the Raiders play St. Francis, a state-tournament team last season, at 11 a.m. at St. Cloud State University.

Roseville’s girls basketball team kicks off its fourth annual tournament on Saturday, Dec. 27, and the event continues with rounds two and three on Dec. 29 and 30, respectively. The Raiders open up against Apple Valley at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The other teams in the tournament are Andover, Bloomington Jefferson, Centennial, Cambridge-Isanti, Lakeville South and St. Anthony Village.

The girls hockey team at Roseville is once again headed to the Kaposia Classic at Wakota Arena in South St. Paul. The tournament runs Jan. 1-3.

The Raiders play Blake, which is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A, on New Year’s Day at 2:15 p.m. Also playing in the tournament are Bloomington Jefferson, Hibbing/Chisholm, Hill-Murray, International Falls, Mounds View and the host Packers.

There are two other RAHS teams in action over the holiday break, but not in tournaments. The boys hockey team, which has traditionally played in the Schwan Cup at the Super Rink in Blaine, decided to skip that event this year and instead is playing a pair of non-conference games. The Raiders host Tartan on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Totino-Grace on Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The Roseville Nordic ski teams also have a meet over the break, on Dec. 30 at Battle Creek Park in St. Paul.

Concordia Academy

In action over the holiday break from Concordia are the boys and girls basketball teams and the boys hockey team.

The boys basketball team is playing in the Crusader Classic hosted by St. Cloud Cathedral High School for the 10th consecutive season. The tournament runs Dec. 29-31 and the Beacons play the first game of the classic at 2 p.m. on Dec. 29 against Watertown-Mayer. Also participating are Braham, Litchfield, Mandan (N.D.), Melrose, Pierz and St. Cloud Cathedral.

Concordia’s girls basketball team plays in the South St. Paul tournament for the third consecutive year. The four-team event runs Dec. 26 and 27 at South St. Paul High School and features Concordia Academy, the host Packers, Coon Rapids and Cristo Rey Jesuit.

Last but not least is the Legacy Christian Academy/Concordia Academy boys hockey team, which has the longest trip of the six squads mentioned. The Lions are headed up north for the North Shore Holiday Tournament in Silver Bay and Two Harbors. This is the sixth consecutive year they’ve played in this tournament.

The event runs Dec. 29-31 and the Lions face Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin in the first game of the tournament. Also participating are Ely/Northeast Range, Henry Sibley, Mora/Hinckley-Finlayson, Moose Lake Area, North Shore and Red Lake Falls.
