Downtown summit scheduled in Lake Elmo

With big development projects and other changes on the horizon, some Lake Elmo residents feel left in the dark about some of the new ventures the city has undertaken. In an effort to bring the public up to speed, city officials have scheduled a downtown summit to be held at Christ Lutheran Church on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.

"Given the content [the city] decided to have this meeting in a larger space to allow a broad demographic of our residents the opportunity to become informed on these important topics," communications coordinator Alyssa MacLeod said.

The following topics will be discussed at the meeting:

• Lake Elmo Avenue Street reconstruction
• Sewer installation and costs
• Anti-flooding and drainage plans
• Sidewalks and tree preservation efforts
• Downtown market analysis and surrounding densities
• Park and Village green discussion

MacLeod said there would be a 15-minute presentation on each topic, followed by a short question-and-answer period. Members of the Lake Elmo City Council, Planning Commission and Economic Development Authority, city staff, Washington County staff and members of the University of Minnesota's Extension will be speaking on these topics and fielding questions.

City administrator Dean Zuleger said city staff has been studying and working on plans to address these issues extensively over the past two years -- particularly drainage and flooding problems, the addition of municipal sewer through downtown, the rebuilding of Lake Elmo Avenue and future development and market analysis of the downtown Village area.

The downtown summit will also provide a unique opportunity for residents to interact with city and county officials, as well as city staff, commission members, and development experts all in one place.

The summit is free and open to all members of the public. For those who cannot make it, MacLeod said, the meeting will be recorded and rebroadcast in its entirety on cable channel 16, and be available for later viewing on the city's webpage. Christ Lutheran Church is located at 11194 36th Street N. in Lake Elmo.
