Tim Faklis joins Review staff

My interest in writing happened by accident. I’m like the Post-it note of journalists.

When I was a 14-year-old freshman in the Edina School District, I had a sudden urge to write about the Minnesota Twins and pro-basketball legend George Mikan, and subsequently created a free blog to accomplish this goal.

When I finished the piece, I was embarrassed by it, but my parents somehow managed to find the post on our home computer. Maybe they were just trying to be supportive (as they’ve always been), but they told me they loved it, and I believed them.

From there, I immersed myself in the world of writing. I wrote about all sorts of things, mainly sports, on this blog that nobody knew about other than my parents.

After I graduated from high school, I wanted to get involved in sports somehow, but not in the avenue of writing. So, when I started at Minnesota State University, Mankato, I entered the sport management program.

I liked what I was learning, but couldn’t shake the idea that a job in the corporate world probably wasn’t for me. So during my sophomore year, I returned to writing, joined the college newspaper staff and switched my major to journalism.

It has been a pretty smooth ride since then. I finished my bachelor’s degree, moved back to the Twin Cities, and began an internship at Minnesota Monthly magazine. I’ve also worked as a contributor to Canis Hoopus, a blog that covers the Minnesota Timberwolves, and still do.

One thing I’m most looking forward to as a reporter at Lillie Suburban Newspapers is getting acquainted with the people and places in the eastern half of the Twin Cities. I’ll be covering Maplewood and North St. Paul, and can’t wait to learn how each city operates - both their differences and similarities.

If my past writing experiences have taught me anything, it’s that I still have a lot to learn about, well, everything and anything.  If my interest in writing can happen, one can only imagine what else I’ll come across in this new stage of my life.

I’d love to hear from you. If you have an idea, a question or just want to introduce yourself, please contact me at tfaklis@lillienews.com or at 651-748-7814.
