Item found Saturday

At a press conference Tuesday, March 19, St. Paul police Sgt. Paul Paulos stated that an item, possibly relating to the disappearance of Kira Trevino, had been found during a search conducted by volunteers on March 16 at Keller Lake Regional Park in Maplewood. St. Paul investigators would not elaborate on the nature of the item.

Volunteers, who had organized through social media, searched the area with dogs. The animals indicated a spot where they picked up a scent on the lake, which led police to search the area with trained cadaver dogs. The cadaver dogs indicated the same spot, so police began a search of Keller Lake on March 17.

Sherriff's office spokesman Randy Gustafson stated that the 11-member dive team, made up of divers from the sheriff's office and St. Paul police department, had searched an 80- to 90-foot area around the spot indicated by the dogs on March 19.

“The lake is 4 to 6 feet deep with 24-inch thick ice on the top. The divers have about 5 feet of visibility. There’s some muck on the bottom, but it’s clear,” Gustafson said.

Keller Lake is part of a chain of lakes. To the north are Kohlmann, Gervais and Spoon lakes. The Keller Lake water flows south to Round Lake and Lake Phalen. Although police have finished combing Keller Lake for the day, they urged people to continue searching the area.

“We may go to a different area of that lake. We don’t want people to stop looking just because we’ve looked there already,” Paulos said.

Trevino, 30, was reported missing by her husband, Jeffery Trevino, 39, on Feb. 24. She was last seen in the evening on Feb. 21. Jeffery Trevino has since been charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Even though a body has not yet been located, investigators found enough blood in the Trevinos’ home to presume Kira was murdered.

Keller Lake is only a few miles from the Trevinos’ home on the East Side of St. Paul.
